SEACHEM Reef Phytoplankton

SEACHEM Reef Phytoplankton is a concentrated blend of green and brown marine phytoplankton designed to provide the essential fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, amino acids, with biological carotenoids for invertebrate diet. Size ranges from 1-20 ?m to feed a broad range of tropical marine aquarium filter feeders and invertebrates.

SEACHEM Reef Phytoplankton contains a natural source of carotenoids which provides essential proteins as well as a more bioavailable source of pigmentation when compared to other natural sources and synthetic pigments. Carotenoids provide the extra benefit of antioxidant activity.

In addition, SEACHEM Reef Phytoplankton is enhanced to increase the bioavailability of important nutrients such as proteins, lipids, B vitamins, and other organic pigments, thus, corals expend less energy to derive the nutritional benefit.

It is blended to contain the proper ratio of fatty acids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Blending phytoplankton yields better nutritional value. Studies show increased consumption of phytoplankton in filter feeders when using mixed cultures versus a single culture of phytoplankton.

Shake well before using. Add 1 capful (5 mL) per 200 L (50 US gallons) of water twice weekly or as required to maintain coral growth. For best results, dose directly to aquarium; target feeding can overwhelm corals and have a negative impact. Refrigeration after opening is recommended, but not required.

A: Reef Phytoplankton is a blend of algae based plankton sources and is recommended for feeding soft coral species especially. Reef Zooplankton is a blend of protein based plankton such as artemia and rotifer species and is recommended for feeding LPS and SPS corals.

Do I have to keep Reef Phytoplankton in the refrigerator after opening?

A: There is no need to refrigerate this product as it contains preserving agents that help the product maintain its integrity even if not refrigerated. As long as it is kept at room temperature, it should be fine for use.

Do you have a food for copepods?

A: We do not have a specific copepod food, but we do have Reef Zooplankton and Reef Phytoplankton that can be used for feeding purposes. Some individuals have reported that Reef Phytoplankton can be used to feed rotifer cultures as well.

Can I spot feed with Reef Zooplankton or Reef Phytoplankton?

A: With any supplements that are concentrated such as Reef Zooplankton or Reef Phytoplankton, it is best to disperse them into the aquarium and “blanket feed” rather than direct feeding as the components or even force applied from spot feeding can induce stress in sensitive coral tissue. They are really designed to be dosed into the tank itself and for the plankton sources to be taken in by the coral polyps from the water column versus target feeding.
